What is the difference between deep learning and usual machine learning?

The below diagram makes it clear that deep learning is a subset of machine learning (ML), which itself is a subset of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Now let us understand each one of these terms in a simple way.

The goal of all computing is to make the life of humans easy!!!. Computers have taken the burden of heavy calculations and other activities which are tedious for humans.

However, there are still tasks that humans are better at than computers, for example being creative in decision making process or coming up with new ideas. The field of AI looks to bridge this gap.

AI is nothing but the ability of machines to simulate human behavior and take decisions intelligently like humans.

Machine learning
is a subset of AI where the machine tries to learn the relationship between variables based on what it has seen in the data. It uses different pre-defined optimization algorithms to achieve this. This relationship can then be used for future forecasting.

Deep learning is that subset of ML which tries to mimic the functioning of a human brain for decision making purposes. Humans learn from their experiences in life. Human brain functions with the help of neurons in the brain which come together to form neural networks which fire up before humans make any decision. Similarly an artificial neural network can be created which is capable of learning from the data and take intelligent decisions.
